Numerous personal items were found on board La Belle, including clothing (fragments of cloth from uniforms, buckles, buttons, leather shoes), jewelry, wooden rosary beads and a crucifix, fragments of smoking pipes, writing instruments and whistles. Perhaps more than any recovered cargo, these objects help us bridge the gap between the present and past, connecting us to the individuals who followed La Salle's dream and made the voyage to the New World. |
