| Spanish soldiers and missionaries played lead roles in securing the northern frontier of New Spain. Posted to presidios (forts) such as Presidio La Bahia, soldiers guarded the missionaries and native neophytes at Espiritu Santo and helped establish permanent European-style settlements on the South Texas Plains.
