Winter fog hangs over the canyons near Hinds Cave, which is just visible on the canyon wall near the center of this 1980 photo. Note the eroded rocky terrain in the foreground and the scar of a ranch road. The upland edges were said to be covered in enough soil early in the 20 th century so that horseback travel was practical. In fact, there was enough grass then to support horse and cattle grazing.
