| A large fragment of a tubular smoking pipe made of sandstone and
decorated with black asphaltum and red ocher. The reconstructed geometric design consists of four red ovals outlined by wide black (asphaltum) dividers. Stone smoking
pipes have been found at other sites in the region, but there are very few other examples of painted pipes. Adapted from Black 1986: Figure 9. Similar, although undecorated, sandstone pipes have been found at Loma Sandia and other sites on the South Texas Plains as well as along the coast and in central and southwest Texas. Tobacco smoking was widespread among native peoples in North America and was often used in ceremonies. |
