Caddo-speaking peoples in east Texas lived in villages, sometimes quite large such as the one depicted here of a settlement on the Red River, illustrated by the Spanish expedition of 1691-1692, led by Terán del Rio. The community consisted of small farmsteads or extended family compounds, each surrounded by rows of trees or bushes. The settlement is believed to have stretched along several miles of the Red River.
