More recent visitors at the shelter left behind an array of glass, metal artifacts, and ammunition, including a Confederate uniform button(top row, middle) and a 1857 U.S. half-dime. The uniform button is marked with an "I" for infantry, and possibly belonged to a soldier in Gen. H. H. Sibley's brigade who passed through Sabinal, Texas, en route to New Mexico, where they fought the battle of Val Verde near Fort Craig in 1862. Photo by Aaron Norment. Click to enlarge. |
