| The three major stratigraphic zones defined by Duffen are visible in this photo of two five-foot excavation "levels". In the wall of the uppermost "level," the dark midden zone overlies the transition zone, which contained a few artifacts and the bones of both modern and extinct animals, In the lower most walls are Pleistocene-age sand and gravel layers.
