Two Indian men in elaborate dress are shown in enigmatic stances: one wrapped with arms folded in a blanket, the other fixing an arrow into his bow. It is unclear whether they are friends or foes. The man at left wears what has been identified as an otter hat, along with feathers, elaborate neck ornaments, a blanket, loin cloth, fringed leggings, and beaded moccasins. The second figure is dressed in apparel of likely European origin: a red coat with buttons, cuffs, and epaulettes. According to LaMont’s research, this man is Osage, based on his shaved head, painted bars on his face, decorated neck choker, silver medallion, short breechcloth, decorated garters and moccasins with flared cuff.
