Archeologist points to a deeply buried occupation layer in the eroded wall of the arroyo that gives the Falcon Arroyo site its newly appointed name. The layer being pointed to is about 25 feet below the surface, much deeper than the one 10 feet below the surface that was selected for excavation). This photo was taken in 1950; the 1951 excavation report does not mention the existence of deeper cultural layers for reasons that are unclear. Regardless, the deep stratigraphy and characteristic light tan silty clay alluvial deposits of the Rio Grande are apparent. Photograph by Jack Hughes, TARL archives.
