| The tranquil Garcitas Creek today belies the dramatic events that played out nearby at the site of La Salle’s ill-fated colony. Then known as “Riviere aux Boeufs,” in reference to the many buffalo that roamed the grassy prairies, the brackish creek saw French settlers struggling to exist in a foreign wilderness amid hostile natives.
