Depiction of the murder of La Salle, March 1687. En route to Canada to gain help for his beleaguered colony, the explorer was ambushed and killed by several of his men in east Texas. Later, one of his companions reported: “We followed them a few paces along the river as far as the fatal spot where two of the assassins were hiding on either side in the grass with their guns cocked.
