La Salle’s settlers remove timbers and supplies from La Salle’s wrecked ship, Aimable, to use in the new settlement. The ship ran aground on a sandbar in eight- or nine-feet of water and was pounded by ground swells until she broke up. Wreck of Aimable on the Coast of Texas, 1685, by George Catlin. Image on display in the Museum of the Coastal Bend, Victoria, Texas. Original painting in the Paul Mellon Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington. |
