Stratum 1: Bottom Sand

Stratum 1 is a fine, very compacted, dark red sand which extends in a thin layer over part of the shelter floor (it is absent at the south end of this excavation). This is the first fill on the rock floor of the south excavation unit, and one of the three attributed to river flood deposition at the base of the shelter.

There was no evidence of humanly modifed material, such as chipping debris or tools. Stratum 1 is culturally sterile.
