Photo of freshwater mussels
Freshwater mussels, the dark brown objects shown in this underwater photo, were collected from the Little River by  prehistoric campers. The shells were dumped near the hearths after their tasty contents had been eaten. Archeologists uncovered large concentrations of shells at the site. Photo courtesy U. S.
