| This large feature contained both heat-fractured sandstone as well as stacked clusters of stream-rolled quartz cobbles in a shallow basin. Both reflect use as heat-retaining elements for cooking. The quartz cobbles likely were used for "stone-boiling" foods such as mussels, the sandstone for heating pit ovens for roasting foods such as plant bulbs or tubers. |
