Varieties of conch (Busycon) columella beads left as grave offerings at Mitchell Ridge. Style I, the large biconically drilled bead form with minimally smoothed exteriors, was associated with an Initial Late Prehistoric grave (Burial 7). Style II, the small chunky form drilled from only one direction, was associated with several Protohistoric graves. Style III includes both long and short versions, all of which have heavily smoothed into very symmetrical cylindrical shapes, were found in only Early Historic period graves. Most of the Style III beads were biconically drilled except those shown on far left of bottom row. These wampum-style beads have smooth cylindrical bore holes and were probably produced on a lathe by traders. Adapted from Ricklis 1994, Figure 11.1. |
