Dating to the final Late Prehistoric period, the Feature 87 grave held an adult male, 35-39 years of age, accompanied by a fascinating set of offerings. Stone tools including small bifaces and simple flake tools were included as well as two shark's teeth. But the most unusual grave object was a small oblong mass of asphaltum that formed a handle into which 13 sharpened hispid cotton rat incisors were set in a single row. This is thought to be a shaman-curer's bloodletting tool, suggesting that the man was a shaman/healer. Adapted from Ricklis 1994, Figure 8.27. |
