Radiocarbon dates from the Galveston Bay area appear to show a gap between about 3500-3000 years ago that author Ricklis attributes to the last period of sea level rise. During such intervals, the productivity of estuary environments are thought to have deteriorated due to the inundation of marshland nursery areas. When the modern sea level was reached about 3,000 years ago, the Galveston Bay system became an extremely productive estuary.
