| Cattail is a good candidate for one of the marshy plants on Isla Malhado that Cabeza de Vaca described as being the main source of food during the winter. Cattail rhizomes (root-like stems that grow underwater) are edible and grow in the marshy ponds that formed in the swales at the Mitchell Ridge site. Photos by Phil Dering. |
