Many of the deeply incised canyons are lined by cliffs, their walls so steep that they are all but invisible until you are almost standing on the canyon edge. Viewed from the air, the canyons form tree-like patterns with the rivers as trunks and the smaller streams and side canyons forming limbs and branches twisting and turning across the land.
