Pictograph panel at site VV50, a rockshelter high on a cliff overlooking the Devils River. This was one of the sites documented by David Gebhard's rock art recording team in 1958. The pictographs visible in this image are in the Pecos River style, which is now known to date as early as 4500 years ago (2500 B.C.).Photo from Amistad National Recreation Area-National Park Service (ANRA-NPS) archives at TARL.

The chalk board reads VL50 instead of VV50, because of initial confusion concerning the proper Smithsonian trinominal designation for Val Verde County (the site's full official designation is 41VV50, Texas being the 41st state when this system was set up during the River Basin Survey program.)
