Some type of indoor lighting would have been necessary for the family to complete tasks at night, such as preparing meals, washing dishes, or reading a newspaper. Seventy-three oil lamp or candle lantern pieces were recovered from within the farmstead, and most were found in the house block. This image shows five different oil lamp burners and one burner cone (d). Four of the five are made of brass, but one burner mechanism (e) is iron.

It is not likely that the family used all five oil lamps at one time. It may be that these represent oil lamps that accumulated over their 30-year occupation, and that some of them were older and perhaps nonfunctional.
