| The bag contained a total of 187 Buckeye seeds (Ungnadia speciosa). Buckeye and other plants containing toxic alkaloids, such as saponins, have been used by indigenous peoples as a fish poison. The seeds are first crushed into a mash, then broadcast into the water. Fish take the poison in through their gills causing them to be momentarily stunned and float to the surface, where they are easily dispatched by the hunters. |
