A typical “oxbow” lake west of the Guadalupe River in south Texas. Such lakes, including Linn Lake, are formed when rivers, typically at flood stage, cut a different, straighter channel, abandoning a more meandering course. Sealed off from the active river, the old meander channel forms a lake.
