Numerous chewed masses of plant fibers known as quids were found at Carved Rock Shelter. They represent the consumption of the leaf bases of baked plants such as agave lechugilla. The fiberous leaves were stripped of edible sugary flesh, much like how one eats artichokes, except in this case the leaves were chewed to get every last morsel. TARL Collections.
