A cluster of stacked mussel shells was found in the trash midden and work area in front of Hank's house. The entire cluster was removed intact. When cleaned and taken apart back in the laboratory, there proved to be six half-shells. Such large mussels (freshwater clams) must have come from the Canadian River and were probably brought to the site and cached (or simply set aside) to be used to make tools or ornaments. (The amount of edible meat in such a clam is very modest—not worth hauling very far.) Photo by Doug Boyd.
