This unsigned and undated pen and ink sketch depicts the same scene except the houses are shown as domed earth lodges with slab foundations. This sketch from the archives of the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, was probably done by Johnson as an initial study for the color painting. If so, it suggets that his interpretation shifted radically, perhaps as a result of Studer's influence. Courtesy Chris Lintz.
