Wide, shallow spots on the Medina and San Antonio rivers were used as crossing points for thousands of years, first by native peoples and later by Spanish explorers and missionaries. In later times, these passageways were critical to the flow of transportation and commerce from the Rio Grande to San Antonio and points east.
